Steps, Stories, and Spiritual Moments at Garamedhanialem

Grade 12 students recently organized and participated in a hiking trip to Garamedhanialem, creating an experience that blended adventure, learning, and personal reflection. The trip, which brought together members of the graduating class, quickly became a highlight of the academic year.
From the early hours of departure, there was a noticeable sense of excitement and unity among the students. Laughter and anticipation filled the air as they set off, eager to explore a new environment outside the classroom. This shared enthusiasm helped foster a strong sense of community, with students supporting and encouraging one another throughout the journey.
The hike itself presented both physical challenges and rewarding moments. As the group made its way along the trail, students had the opportunity to appreciate the natural landscape, taking in scenic views and enjoying the refreshing outdoor atmosphere. Despite the demanding sections of the hike, the group remained motivated, demonstrating teamwork and resilience.
One of the most adventurous parts of the trip was the exploration of a cave, which sparked curiosity and excitement among the students. The experience offered a sense of discovery, allowing them to engage directly with the natural features of the area. In addition, the group visited a local museum, where they learned about the historical background and cultural significance of Garamedhanialem. This educational component added depth to the trip, connecting students with the heritage of the location.
A particularly meaningful moment occurred when the students received prayers from monks. Many described this as a peaceful and reflective experience, providing a sense of spiritual connection and calm. It served as a moment of pause during an otherwise active day, leaving a lasting emotional impact on those who participated.

Overall, the hiking trip to Garamedhanialem was more than just an outdoor activity. It offered students the chance to bond, learn, and reflect together in a unique setting. The combination of adventure, cultural exploration, and shared experiences strengthened relationships within the group and created memories that will stay with them long after graduation.

St. John Baptist De La Salle Catholic School Launches Comprehensive Safeguarding Initiative

St. John Baptist De La Salle Catholic School is proud to announce the launch of a robust new Safeguarding and Student Protection initiative. Rooted in our faith and our dedication to the well-being of every student, this initiative represents a proactive step in creating a safe, supportive, and respectful environment where physical, emotional, and spiritual growth can truly thrive.
"Grounded in Catholic values, we are called to embody care, compassion, and justice. We recognize the inherent dignity of every person and are deeply committed to protecting the vulnerable among us. Standing together, we build a community of accountability and truth."
A Global Mission, A Local Commitment
This launch is part of a broader, global Lasallian commitment to child protection. At the direct request of Brother Armin Luistro, Superior General, the Institute has prioritized safeguarding standards across all communities to create a safer environment for children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
To bring this global vision to our local campus, Brother Moses Abunya, Auxiliary Visitor and Coordinator for Safeguarding in the Lwanga District, recently conducted an intensive training program for all our teachers and staff. The training focused heavily on risk management, recognizing cultural differences when listening to children, preventing abuse, and responding appropriately to allegations.
As Brother Moses noted regarding the wider district efforts, "The commitment of all is to prevent abuse and to implement the right procedures... being together with other people and experts raises everyone’s awareness and commitment." This sentiment echoes the global Lasallian community's shared responsibility to champion the rights and safety of the students entrusted to our educational mission.
Zero Tolerance Policy
Safeguarding at our school is more than just compliance; it is the active living out of our faith. As such, St. John Baptist De La Salle Catholic School enforces a strict Zero Tolerance Policy for abuse, bullying, harassment, or misconduct of any kind. This applies universally to all staff, volunteers, parents, and students.
Reportable concerns include:
- Bullying: Physical, verbal, or cyber.
- Abuse: Emotional, physical, or sexual.
- Neglect: Failure to provide basic needs or care.
- Misconduct: Inappropriate behavior by staff or students.
- Safety Hazards: Unsafe physical conditions on campus.
A New, Confidential Reporting System
To empower our community, students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members alike, we have introduced a new, highly secure Safeguarding Reporting System.

Outstanding Student Achievements in Sub-City Competition

Our school proudly celebrates the remarkable achievements of its students in the recent sub-city competition. Demonstrating creativity, dedication, and academic excellence, several students earned top positions across different categories.

Nathnael Woldemariam secured second place in the Physics category, presenting a skydiving simulation project. In the Chemistry category, Bethlehem Hailu and Feven Mulugeta achieved first place with their project on converting oil into biodiesel.
In the field of technology, Dan Maregn earned first place in the ICT category, reflecting innovation and technical ability through an agricultural project. Additionally, Abel Addis won second place in the Arts category, showcasing impressive creativity through a line drawing.
These accomplishments are especially meaningful as our school was represented under challenging conditions at Yekatit 23 School. Despite these circumstances, the students performed exceptionally well and brought pride to our school community.
We are incredibly proud of all our participants. Students who secured first place will go on to represent the sub-city in the upcoming city-level competition. We wish them continued success as they take this next important step.

Learning Never Stops: Our Strength in Challenging Times

Besides the title, it reminds us that we are strong, courageous, and dedicated. No matter the challenges we face, we always find a way to keep moving forward. Our spirit of learning and resilience guides us through even the most difficult times.
Recently, the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has led to a fuel shortage here in Ethiopia. This has made it difficult for many families to find petrol and diesel, and as a result, transportation has become a daily challenge. Some students are no longer able to travel to school by car, and everyday routines have been disrupted.
However, what stands out the most is our determination. Despite these obstacles, we continue to come to school and focus on our education. This shows how committed we are to learning. Even when transportation is limited, we do not let it stop us. We walk when we must, adapting to the situation so we can keep moving forward.
This sends a powerful message to our community: education is something we protect, no matter what. Our dedication proves that even in difficult times, learning remains our priority.

St. John Baptist De La Salle Catholic School High School Students Shine in 6th EHRC Moot Court Competition

St. John Baptist De La Salle Catholic School participated in the 6th Ethiopian Human Rights Commission Moot Court Competition held in Addis Ababa. Throughout all stages of the competition the students were guided and supported by their Teacher Dawit Gebre whose assistance played an important role in the team’s preparation and performance.
The first round was conducted at Menen Secondary School where students Blen Jenbere and Kidus Teshome represented St.John Baptist De La Salle Catholic School on a case concerning forced eviction. The session began at 8:30 in the morning and concluded at 2:00 in the afternoon. The team performed well and successfully advanced to the next stage of the competition.
The next phase was an orientation session held at the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission headquarters near Meskel Square. This session also started at 8:30 in the morning and ended at 2:00 in the afternoon with a short tea break. During this stage Blen Jenbere and Fenet Ararsa represented the school. The orientation introduced the topic of education and conflict and provided useful guidance on legal research case preparation and presentation skills.

Following the orientation the students continued their preparation at school under the supervision of their teachers. This included practicing oral arguments, drafting written submissions and participating in an internal moot court exercise to strengthen their confidence and readiness for the final round.

The regional final round was held on March 28. The team arrived at 8:30 in the morning and waited for their turn as other teams completed their sessions. Team numbers were assigned upon arrival and St. John Baptist De La Salle Catholic School was designated as Team 8. During the round the team first represented the Respondent and later the Applicant presenting arguments from both perspectives.

At the conclusion of the competition the results were announced and St. John Baptist De La Salle Cathoilc School ranked second receiving a certificate of recognition for their performance. Overall the competition was a valuable experience that helped the students develop their legal understanding critical thinking and advocacy skills.
